Spratt's Canary and Budgerigar Mixture Vintage Sign
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION & HISTORY
Original collectible Spratts Canary and Budgerigar Mixture enamel sign number 342. These signs were made with cat, dog, canary and fish writing and graphics and are highly sought after by collectors.
James Spratt developed and manufactured the first commercial pet food in the UK around 1860. After seeing dogs being fed leftover biscuits from a ship, Spratt formulated the first dog biscuit: a mix of wheat meals, vegetables, beetroot and beef blood. His business venture was a success, meeting a new market demand and selling to the English fine gentry for their sporting dogs. A British public company took over Spratt’s formula and production began at a U.S. operation in about 1890.
As per the photo, there is the usual rust, scratches and blemishes on this sign's patina as it has no doubt been weathered. The surface polish is dull but the writing and pictorial graphics are still superb for it's 80+ year vintage. Ideal for first collector of Spratts, Birds or for the discerning collector wishing to complete their collection.
